After the runaway success of Venom, Sony’s parallel Spider-Verse was destined to continue in one way or another. Morbius, starring Jared Leto, is the second villain-fronted film to come from their franchise, and its first trailer has a massive, world-shaking surprise for Marvel and Spidey fans.
Jared Leto looks entirely in his element as Michael Morbius, playing both the dying, desperate scientist and the bloodthirsty villain with equal, Leto-y intensity. His action and animation as The Living Vampire looks cool as hell, but cooler than butt-kicking vampire action is the split-second cameo at the end of the trailer that turns his corner of the Spider-Verse on his head.
Yup, that’s Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming, greeting Michael Morbius like an old pal. Toomes is even wearing the white prison jumpsuit he had on in Homecoming‘s post-credit scene, cementing this version of the character as identical to the one who appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This could be the first time Sony has used its joint production of Marvel’s Spider-Man movies to move whole characters from one cinematic universe to the next, or it could turn out to be a fake-out when Morbius’ Vulture turns out to be an alternate universe version of the MCU villain — either way, it’s a ballsy move that makes Morbius immediately more interesting for Marvel fans who want to see what the deal is with Spider-Man’s complex cinematic world.
Morbius premieres July 31.
