Newcastle United confirmed on Friday that they have signed Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad on a long-term deal.
Isak has been touted as one of the hottest prospects in the world and found himself as a permanent fixture for the Sweden national team. He made a name for himself at Sociedad and scored 44 goals in 132 appearances.
British media have reported that Newcastle have paid around 59 million pounds ($70.03 million) to sign the 22-year-old. This amount eclipses the 40 million pounds the Magpies paid for Bruno Guimaraes in January and Joelinton in 2019.
Isak is Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer after they had acquired the services of Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Matt Targett earlier in the window.
Speaking after signing for the club, as quoted by Reuters, the 22-year-old said that Newcastle is a great club that anyone would like to play for. He said that the Magpies fans were a big reason why he wanted to join the club.
He also said that Eddie Howe’s team plays attractive football and he wanted to be part of that.
“It is a great, historical club that I think anyone would like to play for, with amazing fans. They were a big part of why I came here and also the club’s project, which is one that I really believe in.”
“You always want to go into a team and know how they play. I think Newcastle play very attractive football and I want to be a part of that,” said Isak.
Howe also commented on Isak’s signing and hailed him as an outstanding talent who is capable of making a big contribution to the team.
“He is an outstanding talent who is capable of making a big contribution to the team.”
“He is technically very good, with a mix of attributes that will complement us, but he is also at a great age to grow with this club,” said Howe.
